Itinerary
It starts with an early morning pick-up from the hotel or residence in Kigali. Following a warm welcome and briefing on the tour by your professional driver-guide, you head out on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Akagera National Park. While making your way through the beautiful landscapes of the Eastern Province of Rwanda, planned stopovers along the way are ideal for capturing the beauty of the Rwandan countryside. Upon arrival at Akagera, check in at Mantis Akagera Game Lodge for lunch and some time to rest. In the afternoon, you will go on a very interesting sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema. While the sun sets, expect to see hippos and crocodiles lying on its shores, among others, and various bird species that are residents of the lake.
After this serene experience, return to the lodge for dinner and retire to a restful night.
Overnight: Mantis Akagera Game Lodge. (Meal Plan: Bed and Breakfast).
Spend your morning having a full breakfast, then embark on an all-day safari game drive through Akagera National Park. Your expert guide shall navigate you across the different habitats of the park as he engages you in viewing chances of finding the Big Five, rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and other animals, such as zebras, giraffes, and baboons. Akagera is equally a utopia among bird enthusiasts; it houses over 500 species of birds. Have picnic lunches in one of the scenic spots in the park as you continue your park exploitation.
Drive back to Kigali later in the afternoon. Check-in at Iris Guest House. The remainder of the day is yours for whatever you would like to do to soak up the vibrant culture of the city, but most especially to rest after a very exhausting day.
Overnight: Iris Guest House, on a bed-and-breakfast basis
After enjoying your breakfast, your guide will pick you up for a beautiful drive to Nyungwe National Park in western Rwanda. You will travel through some of the most spectacular views of the country's iconic terraced hills and lush green landscapes, which will provide many opportunities to stop and take photographs. On arrival at Nyungwe, park guides will brief you before embarking on one of the highlight activities of the Canopy Walk Adventure.
This will be an exhilarating experience, as you make a cross over a bridge suspended 70 meters above the forest floor, affording panoramic views of the ancient Montane rainforest view that few people ever have. After the canopy walk, proceed back to your accommodation at the EAR KEN Barham Guest House, where you retire to evening relaxation in a serene atmosphere. Dinner will be served this evening while you rest from a day of events.
Overnight: EAR KEN Barham Guest House (Meal Plan: Bed and breakfast).
Early breakfast on the final day gives a kick-start for a chimpanzee trekking adventure in Nyungwe Forest. You enter deep within the forest with one experienced tracker, listening to the unmistakable pant-hoots of these chimpanzees, which means you are getting close. You will finally come across these energetic primates playing and showing you their complex social behaviors up close.
You may also catch sight of some of the park's many species of birds along the path, including the Ross's turaco and the regal sunbird. After the unforgettable chimpanzee encounter, you will drive back to Kigali and do some souvenir shopping in the bustling markets of the city. Depending on your flight time, you'll either drop off at the hotel or transfer to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. The end of your tour and our services.
