3 Day Uganda & Rwanda: Gorillas & Golden Monkeys
Two Countries. Two Primate Experiences.
Experience two of East Africa’s signature primate encounters in one compact cross-border journey. Travel from Kigali into Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, then return to Rwanda’s Virunga highlands for golden monkey tracking and cultural discovery.
Bwindi’s Rushaga sector is one of the park’s established gorilla-tracking areas, and Uganda Wildlife Authority notes that trekking can take roughly two to seven hours depending on the gorillas’ movements and forest conditions. Once a habituated family is located, the standard viewing period is one hour.
The final stage takes you back across the border to Musanze and Volcanoes National Park, where golden monkeys move through bamboo forest below the Virunga volcanoes. Visit Rwanda itself pairs gorilla and golden monkey tracking as complementary primate experiences in the region.

Tour Plan
DAY 1: Kigali to Bwindi – Rushaga & Batwa Experience
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your Opportune Safaris driver-guide and receive a short briefing before beginning the journey north toward Uganda.
Travel through Rwanda’s rolling highlands before crossing the border and continuing toward the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The route offers changing views of cultivated hills, mountain landscapes and rural communities across both countries.
After arrival in the Bwindi area and check-in, visit a Batwa community for an introduction to their history, traditions and relationship with the forest. Learn about traditional skills, listen to community stories and experience music and dance shared by local hosts.
DAY 2: Gorilla Trekking & Authentic Cultural Experience
Begin early with breakfast before transferring to the Bwindi park briefing point for your mountain gorilla trekking experience.
Accompanied by Uganda Wildlife Authority guides and trackers, enter Bwindi’s dense rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family. Trekking duration varies according to the gorillas’ movements, terrain and weather conditions. Once the family is located, spend the permitted viewing period observing their behaviour in their natural forest habitat.
After the trek, return to the lodge to freshen up and have lunch before beginning the journey back toward Rwanda.
Cross the border and continue through the highlands toward Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Check in and enjoy a relaxed evening after the day’s trekking and travel.
DAY 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Transfer to Musanze
After breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing before beginning your golden monkey trekking experience.
Walk through the park’s bamboo forest with an experienced guide in search of a habituated golden monkey group. Once located, spend time observing their energetic movements, feeding behaviour and social interactions in their natural habitat.
After the trek, return for a quick refresh and lunch before visiting the Gorilla Guardians Village for a cultural experience introducing aspects of Rwandan traditions, music, dance and community life.
Later, begin the scenic journey back to Kigali. Depending on your international flight schedule, there may be time for last-minute souvenir shopping before your transfer to Kigali International Airport.
